Abstract

ENGLISH: The last season of excavations conducted into the Late Antique city of Classe has got many new results on material culture and economy of the site. The analysis of some of the pottery ensemble of the town showed the favourite economical place that the port of Ravenna had, from the beginning of the 5th to the 7th century. In this period the most important trade routes connected the imperial capital to North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean Sea, for oil wine and food supply, but also for luxury goods, slaves and textiles, coming through the south Adriatic coast line. The excavation showed also the crisis of the port and its transformation during the 8th century. In the 7th and in the 8th century the wide warehouses were partitioned up with walls set between the storerooms and the porticos and reused as houses and small warehouses. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the different trend of amphora's importations in the town of Classe as a loom for Ravenna economy from the 5th to the 8th century. It's role was not only played as an attractive center for trade but the town was also used as a redistribution place of goods form the whole Mediterranean through north-Italy the Adriatic coastline and central Europe.
