Abstract

ENGLISH: The research presented concerns the basilica Petriana, in Classe (Ravenna), founded by bishop St. Pietro Crisologo (432-450). Judging by the historical records it must have been a magnificent, very large building, which also included a baptistery. Therefore the localisation and the establishment of the plan for this important church in the city of Classe remains an important question in archaeological and historical research. This paper stresses the need for a focus on geo-diagnostics, applying an integrated archaeological, topographical and geophysical approach. Since 2004 the site has been analysed using several methods and technologies. The integration of historical and modern aerial photographs, satellite images, new aerial archaeological survey, geophysical survey and fieldwalking has made it possible to identify several aspects of the archaeological record of the site. From 2008, new archaeological excavations have also been started. The location of the excavations has been chosen on the basis of the analysis of the tracks evidenced by means of geophysical and aerial photography. The archaeological research confirms the diagnostic data and adds agreat deal to our knowledge of the buried complex.
