Abstract
ITALIANO: Dopo il rinvenimento della catacomba nel 1931, al di sotto del convento dei cappuccini di S. Eframo Vecchio, le pitture non erano mai state sottoposte ad interventi di consolidamento e pulizia, tanto che non si intravedevano quasi più le figure e le decorazioni segnalate dallo scopritore, padre Antonio Bellucci. Per queste ragioni la Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra ne ha programmato il restauro: l’intervento, pianificato in più lotti, ha interessato nel 2016-17 l’ambulacro B1, mentre tra il 2018 e il 2020 il cubicolo B5, dove ai tradizionali metodi manuali e meccanici, funzionali alla rimozione degli spessi scialbi, è stata affiancata la tecnologia laser per completare il recupero. L’intervento, rientrante nell’ambito di un progetto interdisciplinare di studio sui cimiteri sotterranei di Napoli, ha restituito un interessante e inedito parterre decorativo e figurativo, esteso alle pareti e alla volta del cubicolo B5 che è stato definito del ‘cielo stellato’. Sulle fronti dei tre arcosoli è emerso uno zoccolo chiaro che emula un opus sectile, mentre negli spazi di risulta, inquadrati da fasce nere e rosse, due palme cariche di frutti; oltre ai resti dell’immagine del buon pastore della lunetta centrale, il restauro ha evidenziato le due figure oranti che campiscono le lunette affrontate con un atteggiamento fastoso e autorappresentativo. In questa sede l’inedita decorazione, risalente agli inizi del V secolo, viene collocata nel panorama artistico partenopeo relativo all’“arte delle catacombe”, ma anche al giro delle esperienze figurative romane, africane ed orientali, senza trascurare il contributo fornito dalle recenti indagini archeologiche in merito all’origine e allo sviluppo del cimitero intorno al sepolcro di Sant’Efebo, vescovo di Napoli nella seconda metà del III secolo. / ENGLISH: After the discovery of the Catacomb in 1931, under the Capuchin Friars’ Convent of St. Eframo Vecchio, its paintings weren’t subject for restoration or consolidation, so much so the figures and the decorations indicated by the discoverer Antonio Bellucci were no longer visible. For this reason the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology planned to carry out a restoration project: the operations, subdivided in several lots, in 2016-2017 concerned the B1 gallery, while in 2018 and 2020 the B5 cubicle. In this case, together with the traditional mechanical and manual methods utilized to remove the thick whitewash, was also used the laser technology to complete the recovery of the painted program. The intervention, part of an interdisciplinary project for the study of Naples subterranean cemeteries, has recovered an interesting and unedited decorative and figurative parterre, extended on the walls and on the vault of the B5 cubicle, called “of the starry sky”. The front of the three arcosolia revealed a pale base imitating opus sectile, while the left-over spaces, defined with red and black lines, show two palm trees laden with fruits; besides the figure of the Good Shepherd in the central lunette, the restoration showed two praying women on the side walls, with a sumptuous and self-representative stance. In this paper the unedited decoration, dating back to the beginning of the fifth century, is integrated not only within the Parthenopean artistic panorama of “Catacombs Art”, but also within Roman, African and Oriental figurative framework, taking into account the important contribution made by the recent archaeological investigations regarding the origin and the development of the cemetery around the tomb of saint Efebo, bishop of Naples in the second half of the third century.
