Abstract
[EN] Scholars have demonstrated, following in the footsteps of Martí de Riquer, that the trajectories of the protagonists in the two fifteenth-century Catalan chivalric romances – the anonymous Curial e Güelfa and Joanot Martorell’s Tirant lo Blanc – were shaped in accordance with the professional paths of contemporary figures such as Guillaume du Chastel, Jacques de Lalaing, and Pero Niño. Having gained fame in the sport of jousting, these knights went on to assume high military responsibilities in wartime and became leaders skilled in strategic manoeuvres. This article extends the connection between the new martial role of knights-errant and the models that ancient history offered to fifteenth-century authors. It proposes a new source of inspiration for the episode of the Albanian spy in Tirant lo Blanc: Joanot Martorell may have drawn on a tale by Herodotus – Zopyrus’s stratagem during the siege of Babylonia under Darius the Great – offering textual evidence for the reception of Lorenzo Valla’s translations from Greek at the court of Alfonso the Magnanimous.
