Abstract
[IT] La devozione che Alfonso il Magnanimo professava ai santi Michele e Giorgio è attestata da numerose fonti documentali e da alcune testimonianze figurative. Bandiere, stendardi, vessilli, dipinti, ecc. recavano l’immagine dei santi (o delle loro armi, nel caso della croce rossa di San Giorgio); la loro presenza continua e visibilità era garantita dalla collocazione di due monumentali sculture alla sommità dell’arco di Castel Nuovo. Entrambi i santi erano inoltre titolari di cappelle fondate in loro onore, e San Giorgio era venerato da diverse confraternite o società cavalleresche. Dando continuità a un culto monarchico che si era consolidato in virtù dell’efficace intervento dei santi in fatti d’armi, Alfonso, come i suoi antenati, invocò la protezione e l’aiuto di questi valerosi e audaci guerrieri per ottenere le sue vittorie, come ben dimostrano le testimonianze documentali e visive raccolte in questo contributo. / [EN] Alfonso the Magnanimous’s devotion to Saints Michael and George is attested by numerous documentary sources and some figurative evidence. Flags, banners, pennants, paintings, and other items bore the image of the saints (or their emblems, such as St George’s red cross); their continuous presence and visibility were ensured by placing monumental sculptures atop the arch of Castel Nuovo. Both saints were honoured with dedicated chapels founded in their name, and St George was further venerated by various brotherhoods and chivalric societies. Continuing a monarchical cult that had taken root through the saints’ effective intervention in military affairs, Alfonso, like his ancestors, invoked the protection and assistance of these valiant and daring warriors to secure his victories, as demonstrated by the documentary and visual testimonies examined in this study.
