Abstract
[EN] This essay analyzes the destiny of the Italian cities from the 10th to the 12th century. More specifi-cally, it focusses on many aspects, including: the evolution of the urban network; the topography and the structure of the seats of power, the revival of inscriptions as means to convey different kinds of messages, including propaganda, and the impressive growth of the stratification inside the cities, due to many different factors. Many archaeological examples are considered and de-scribed, in order to give the reader a vivid picture of a urban society in constant growth. / [IT] Questo saggio analizza le sorti delle città italiane tra i secoli X e XII. Più specificamente, esso si concentra su molteplici aspetti, tra cui: l’evoluzione della rete urbana, la topografia e la struttura delle sedi del potere, la rinascita delle iscrizioni come strumenti per veicolare differenti tipologie di messaggi, inclusi quelli di carattere propagandistico; nonché la notevole crescita della stratificazione sociale all’interno delle città, dovuta a una pluralità di fattori. Numerosi esempi archeologici sono presi in esame e descritti al fine di offrire al lettore un quadro vivido di una società urbana in costante sviluppo.
