Abstract
This introductory essay aims at precising the limits and conditions of an inquiry on the «imperial dimension» of the linguistic politics and communication strategies of royal and princely powers across late medieval and early modern Europe, by pointing to some counterintuitive truths, and avoiding anachronistic conceptions, such as the idea of a planned linguistic program conceived to affect the entire population of a State before the contemporary area. One draws the attention to the fact that the existence of an Imperial political construction did not necessarily mean the enhancement of a unique Imperial language, and that medieval and early modern kingdoms were rarely dominated by a unique «proto-national» language. The fluidity of linguistic strategies, including the recurse to Imperial Latin, as well as other prestigious «referential» languages, and their interaction with a variety of vernacular languages, lets the door open to a vast array of inquiries concerning different case studies.
