Abstract

The story of “Andreuccio da Perugia”, set in the city of Naples by Giovanni Boccaccio in his Decameron, was revisited on film in 1971 by the film-maker Pier Paolo Pasolini, and was the topic of an erudite lecture held in 1911 by the philosopher Benedetto Croce. Pasolini heeded to the artistic lessons of Roberto Longhi to narrate the circumstances of a disciple of Giotto who himself was a character in one of Boccaccio’s tales. Croce focused on the history of the kingdom of Naples during the Angevin rule, and paid particular consideration to the importance of preserving the past by safe-keeping individual and collective memories. The aim of this essay is to compare the reflections of these two scholars who each addressed the Andreuccio’s story in his own way. The paper shall rely on a philosophical concept embodied by the German word Vorverständnis or “preconception”. It shall be used to demonstrate how both scholars adopted Boccaccio’s literary model and artistic sensibility to commingle various media – such as architecture and its content, painting as a tool of art, monuments and their significance, and diverse regional dialects – into a common plot that would enable any writer to recover the experiences from the past.
