Abstract
The fondacos are evidence of an Arabian urban model diffused during the Middle Ages. Such buildings were characteristic of Mediterranean cities such as Naples. By the 19th century they were of great concern for their ongoing degradation, and then known as sites of archaeological discoveries during the post-unity 'Risanamento'. The Neapolitan fondacos have helped to contributed to the historical stratification of the city from ancient times to contemporary age. By studying documentary sources held in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, pertaining to archaeological discoveries at the end of the 19th century, as well as photographic evidence from the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria, we can compare the image and transformation of the original structures with those still extant in Naples, and analyze the evolution of this unique building type in the urban context.
