Abstract
Castel del Monte is one of the most important monuments of Italian and international architectural history, a UNESCO World Heritage site and icon of the reign of Federico II in southern Italy. Over the past 150 years it has been the subject of numerous restorations, which have radically altered its image, including several interventions for restoration of the exterior walls. The contribution provides a critical examination of the various procedures, retracing the milestones of this metamorphosis through images in the documentaries of Istituto LUCE dedicated to Puglia, and in particular to the castle. The approach allows an analysis of the history of restoration and the evolution of the relevant theories, as well as highlighting certain critical issues, particularly with regards to the external surfaces.
