Abstract

Brianza was the ancient name of a small upland, organized as a set of “free” rural municipalities in the 15th century. Beginning in the 17th century, the territory extending between Milan, Como and Lecco became the locality for the country villas and sumptuous gardens of the nobles and wealthy merchants of Milan. Beginning in the late 19th century, it began a further series of continuous changes. “There are landscape and crafts, industry and agriculture, job and religion, cuisine and folklore” (C. Castellaneta); it is „on the edge‟; promised, fabulous, archaic land; very rich in myths and legends; country between 'lights' and 'derived shadows' of its famous inhabitants (L. Santucci). Countless sources interpret the reality of Brianza, offering guidance for overall protection as well as the preservation of individual structures and significant sites. What is more is to identify a territorial reorganization of Brianza, as is now demanded by the entire local citizenry, assuming the grounding hypothesis of the relationships of its major cities and its traditional character as “middle ground”.
