Abstract
Naples is a highly stratified city, in which the urban structure results from the alternation of structures and empty spaces. The cognition of the city depends both on its layout and the fundamental role of the individual monuments in understanding the overall image. This is a complex landscape, resulting from inexorable processes of continuous adjustments. The representation of these transformations leads to understanding, and stimulates memories of the past. In fact, representation enables a synchronic reading of the various configurations that the sites have assumed over time, and itself becomes an expressive sign of the city character. The paper presents the results of a study concerning the urban space facing the Cathedral of Naples, strongly characterized by the presence of the church and by the different configurations that it has assumed over time. Bibliographic and archival research, together with the results of a photogrammetric survey, have permitted 3D modelling based on photography. The models have been used to generate an augmented reality spatial system, obtained through innovative techniques of projection mapping.
