Abstract

ITALIANO: Nei primi decenni del XVI secolo prese corpo nella città di Roma una vasta opera di protezione e recupero della marginalità femminile, che si esplicò nella creazione di specifici istituti destinati a custodire bambine e ragazze, per nutrirle, educarle e soprattutto per proteggerne l’onore e l’onestà. Tali strutture vennero gestite a volte da monache, a volte da oblate o da altre sanctimoniales, ma anche da laiche. Fu in questo contesto che sorse l’orfanotrofio dei Santi Quattro Coronati per accogliere le orfane romane, affidate a un gruppo di terziarie agostiniane. Citato in vario modo nei documenti e a volte confuso con i conservatori, l’istituto assunse presto la fisionomia di un monastero di clausura, seguendo tuttavia norme meno rigide e godendo di maggiori concessioni rispetto alle comunità monastiche coeve. / ENGLISH: In the early decades of the sixteenth century a vast project aimed at protecting and rehabilitating marginalized women took shape in the city of Rome. This resulted in the establishment of specific institutions destined to house girls so as to feed and educate them, and above all to protect their honour and honesty. These establishments were sometimes run by nuns, or else by oblates, or other sanctimoniales, but also by lay women. In this context rose the orphanage of Santi Quattro Coronati, established to house Roman orphans and entrusted to a group of Augustinian tertiary nuns. Mentioned in various ways in the documents, and at times mixed up with girls’ schools, the institution developed early on as a cloistered monastery, although it followed less rigid norms and enjoyed more concessions when compared to other coeval monastic communities.
