Abstract
The contribution of courtly literature in southern Italy was very important, since it contributed significantly to shape and transform the heroic and ethic conscience that characterized the gens Normannorum. So, History and meta-history seemed therefore melt. The brave men sung by Chansons de Gestes and the legendary sovereigns as Charlemagne and Arthur, progressively became the cultural models to which the ruling norman classes were inclined, in order to obliterate the brutal and primal components, having characterized and marked the first men at arms of transalpine origin, arrived in southern Italy. In this process, very important was the role played by the fine Greek culture, able to soften the angularity of the norman ‘urheimat’.
