Abstract

I argue that many literary works from the period c. 1050-c.1200 should be seen as belonging to the category of imperial literature, rather than to any national literature, irrespective of whether they are in French, German or Latin. In discussing the notions of imperial literature and imperial languages, the case is made that the Western Empire produced a long series of “self-representations” which should be taken seriously as such, but which cannot be reduced to a simple ideology or propaganda, as self-criticism and self-reflection was also involved. In particular the memory of the Investiture Struggle was difficult to handle, but it is shown that the imperial self-representation is mainly that of a single empire consisting of a secular and spiritual head who were entirely dependent on each other’s authority. Attention is also drawn to the historiographical discourse on the northern and eastern periphery of the Empire in the late 12th century (Denmark and Poland), whose ambiguities can be utilized as a fruitful source for understanding the significance of imperial literary self-presentation in the period. Finally, it is suggested that Latin was a particularly powerful imperial language – and completely dominating in this period – but that imperial literature should not be defined by language only.
