Abstract

ENGLISH: Between the 9th and 13th centuries freedom from the interference of diocesan authorities permitted such monasteries as benefited from the exemption to interact with the dominant local classes. They were able as a result to influence, to a highly idiosyncratic degree, the transformation not only of the ecclesiastical structures but also of the political and economic structures of the territory. This phenomenon is analysed here from various viewpoints, always paying primary attention to the historical sources. The themes touched on include Papal intervention designed to influence the constitutional configuration of the orders and congregations; the genesis and form of documents emanated for that scope by the pontifical registrar's office; the intricate relationships existing between the papacy, the bishops and the exempted monasteries, as well as relationships existing between the latter and local society.
