Additional Information: Deborah Howard is the principal author of the article itself, apart from the section on the life of the notary Cristoforo del Fiore, which was written by Francesco Bianchi. The transcriptions of all the documents and the glossary have been prepared by Dr. Bianchi. The list of Venetians in Damascus in 1455-1457 was compiled collaboratively. Obviously we have each contributed many details to each other’s work.
