Abstract

[EN] Byzantine Italy and Jewish prayer This article analyses the morning prayer Tefillaṯ ha-šaḥar (“A man should always fear God in secret”), examining its variants across medieval Jewish rites, with a focus on the Romaniote nusaḥ — the rite of Greek and Byzantine Jews — considered the oldest and closest to the ancient Palestinian tradition. Through a comparison of manuscripts and printed editions from the Romaniote, Sicilian, Corfiote, Italian, Ashkenazic and Sephardic rites, the study identifies three types of interpolations aimed at softening the mystical and individualistic character of the text, adapting it for public liturgy. The linguistic analysis also highlights the archaism of the pronominal suffix -מו -mo and the compound attahu (אתהו), the latter attested only in proto-kabbalistic texts of probable Byzantine origin. Finally, the influence of Medieval Greek on the formation of the Hebrew infinitive in Byzantine-area manuscripts is discussed.
