Abstract

[IT] L'articolo sviluppa talune considerazioni sulla presenza ebraica e araba nella Calabria bizantina. È scopo dell'Autore, in particolare, verificare la reiterazione di alcuni topoi antigiudaici e antislamici nelle fonti italogreche, soprattutto agiografiche, che, in realtà, riflettono il perdurare di relazioni stabili fra cristiani, ebrei e, a un certo punto, arabi, in Calabria e in tutta l’Italia meridionale. L’agiografia italogreca aveva menzionato gli ebrei soprattutto nei bioi siciliani precedenti all’invasione araba, con intenti polemici e/o con il riferimento alla loro conversione. Nell’agiografia italogreca di IX-X secolo, invece, gli ebrei sono presenti in forma ridotta, con la sola eccezione del bios di san Nilo. Con il X secolo cambiano infatti i temi e, forse, anche gli obiettivi polemici della letteratura agiografica. I nemici sono adesso gli "infedeli Agareni”, qualificati con una serie di topoi che insistono sulla loro presunta empietà e su altre caratteristiche negative. / [EN] Jews and Arabs in Byzantine Calabria between reality and literary schemes This article develops some considerations on the Jewish and Arab presence in Byzantine Calabria. The author’s aim in particular is to verify the reiteration of some anti-Jewish and anti-Islamic topoi in the Italo-Greek sources, especially hagiographic ones, which reflect the persistence of stable relations between Christians, Jews and Arabs, in Calabria as well as throughout all southern Italy. Italo-Greek hagiography had mentioned Jews especially in Sicilian bioi preceding the Arab invasion, with a polemical intent and reference to their conversion. In the Italo-Greek hagiography of the 9th-10th centuries, Jews are present in a reduced form, with the sole exception of the bios of St. Neilos. In the 10th century, in fact, these themes and ‒ perhaps ‒ even the polemical objectives of hagiographic literature undergo a change: the enemies are now the “infidel Agarens”, qualified with a series of topoi on their alleged impiety and other negative attitudes.
