Abstract
[IT] Il Registrum di Gregorio Magno è fonte essenziale per la storia della presenza ebraica nel Mediterraneo e nei diversi contesti locali dell’Italia meridionale nell’Alto Medioevo. Come è noto, 28 delle 857 lettere pontificie che ci sono pervenute contengono riferimenti a singoli ebrei o comunità ebraiche attive in varie regioni del mondo mediterraneo, principalmente in alcune delle più importanti città del Sud Italia, in Sicilia e in Sardegna. Un’attenta considerazione dell’evoluzione del conflitto tra i Bizantini e i Longobardi contribuisce alla comprensione della genesi e delle finalità della politica di Gregorio verso gli ebrei nell’Italia meridionale, e ad evidenziare la tensione tra “teoria gregoriana” relativa agli ebrei e prassi amministrativa del suo pontificato. The Jews in Southern Italy in the Epistles of Gregory the Great The Registrum of Pope Gregory the Great is a primary source for the history of the Jewish presence in the Mediterranean, including different local contexts in Southern Italy in the early Middle Ages. As is known, 28 of the 857 existing pontifical letters contain references to individual Jews or Jewish communities active in various regions of the Mediterranean world, mainly in the important cities of Southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. A careful consideration of the evolution of the conflict between the Byzantines and the Lombards can contribute to the understanding of the birth and purpose of certain measures undertaken by Gregory against Jews in Southern Italy.
