Abstract

[EN] The language used by Peter Damian (1007-1072) in his youth letters (1st volume of the Reindel edition, 1040-1052) was oft considered baroque and excessive; but this author was only using (in a very excellent way) the teachings of the ars rhetorica, building a prose in which words and meaning are strictly connected at the service of Christian truth and of the inklings of Gregorian Reform. The paper shows some examples of the literary ability of Peter Damian, with a special focus on the Rhetoricae declamationis invectio in episcopum monachos ad saeculum revocantem.
