Abstract
[IT] Come esempio di patrimonio multiculturale nel Mediterraneo, questo articolo si concentra sulla storia e lo stato attuale dell'ex colonia genovese nel quartiere Galata di Istanbul. Questo studio analizza la ricchezza architettonica del quartiere, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il suo passato genovese. Nel corso dei secoli, Galata ha mantenuto un suo carattere distintivo e unico, essendo stata popolata da stranieri, o 'Franchi', che vi si stabilirono, portando i propri costumi, tradizioni e religioni. Tra queste comunità, i Genovesi ebbero un ruolo fondamentale nella formazione e nello sviluppo urbano di Galata attraverso i secoli. Tuttavia, il patrimonio genovese di Galata è attualmente a rischio di scomparsa, a causa di abbandono, mancanza di migliorie e miopia da parte delle istituzioni locali. È fondamentale definire e valorizzare l'ambiente storico-architettonico lasciato dai Genovesi in questa area di Istanbul come un bene culturale per preservare la ricchezza di questo fragile patrimonio materiale. / [EN] As an example of multicultural heritage in the Mediterranean, this article focuses on the history and present-day status of the former Genoese colony in Istanbul's Galata district. This study point outs the architectural richness of the district, especially for what concerns its Genoese past. Throughout the ages, Galata maintained its distinctive and unique character getting populated by foreigners, or 'Franks', who settled themselves in the area, bringing their own customs, traditions and religions. Among these communities, the Genoese played a central role for the formation and urban development of Galata through the centuries. However, the Genoese heritage in Galata district is presently at risk of disappearance, due to neglect, lack of enhancement and oversight by local institutions. It is crucial to define and enhance the historical-architectural environment left by the Genoese in this area of Istanbul as a cultural asset to preserve the richness of this fragile tangible heritage.
