Abstract

[IT] Nel corso del XIII e XIV secolo l’interpretazione dei sensi supera il solo ambito teologico arricchendosi dell’apporto proveniente dalla filosofia e dalla medicina. Uno tra i sensi più toccati da questa trasformazione è l’olfatto, per la sua relazione con la malattia e la morte e per l’importanza attribuita fin dall’antichità all’odor sanctitatis, il profumo emanato dai corpi santi e ritenuto manifestazione ‘dell’approvazione di Dio’. Pur essendo tra le fonti più interessanti per lo studio del cambiamento della percezione dell’odore nel basso medioevo, i sermoni non sono ancora stati interrogati sistematicamente su questo argomento. L’articolo presenta un primo caso di studio sull’odor sanctitatis nell’omiletica Due e Trecentesca attraverso i sermoni dedicati a sant’Antonio di Padova. L’analisi condotta dimostra che la discussione relativa al profumo e alla sua percezione ebbe un importante ruolo nella creazione di una ‘iconografia mentale’ del santo, ossia della fissazione di alcuni attributi a lui legati e del significato ad essi attribuito. / [EN] During 13th and 14th centuries the interpretation of the senses went beyond the mere theological sphere, being enriched by contributions from philosophy and medicine. One of the senses most affected by this process, is the one of smell, due to its relationship with disease and death and the importance attributed since ancient times to the odor sanctitatis, that is the perfume emanated from the holy bodies and considered a manifestation of ‘the approval of God’. While being among the most interesting sources for studying the change in odor perception in the late Middle Ages, sermons have not yet been systematically questioned on this subject. The article presents a first case study on odor sanctitatis as it results in 13th and 14th centuries homiletics through sermons dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Analysing a selection of texts, the author shows that the discussion about perfume and its perception played an important role in the creation of a ‘mental iconography’ of the saint, that is, the fixation of some attributes related to him and their meaning.
