Abstract

DEUTSCH: Ausgehend von dem von Eva Schlotheuber und Daniela Rando herausgegebenen Band zu den Italienbeziehungen Karls IV. verlagert die vorliegende Studie den Schwerpunkt von Politik und Kultur auf die Umweltkrisen des Trecento. Sie untersucht, wie Hunger, extreme Kälte und die Schwarze Pest – zentrale Erfahrungen des 14. Jahrhunderts – mit den Konzepten guten Regierens und des bonum commune verflochten waren. Während die italienischen Stadtstaaten praktische und moralische Modelle für Ernährungssicherheit und Gemeinwohl entwickelten, ignorierte Karl IV. diese, obwohl sie ihm bekannt waren, weitgehend. Seine Herrschaft offenbart eine auffällige Distanz zwischen der konkret erlebten Naturkatastrophe und der kaiserlichen Verantwortung für das Gemeinwohl. / ENGLISH: Building on Schlotheuber and Rando’s volume on Charles IV’s Italian engagements, this study shifts focus from politics and culture to environmental crisis. It explores how famine, extreme cold, and the Black Death – core experiences of the 14th century – intersected with concepts of good governance and the bonum commune. While Italian city-states developed practical and moral frameworks for food security and welfare, Charles IV, though exposed to these models, largely ignored them. His reign reveals a striking detachment between lived experience of natural disaster and imperial responsibility for the common good.
