Abstract

In 1484 the war between the Republic of the Serenissima and Ferrara ended, war that had as pretext and cause the violation by the duke of Ferrara Ercole d'Este of the convention of 1405 that ruled the salt trade and that lead Venice to have the definitive control of Polesine and Rovigo, whilst it remained to the Estensi a zone of territory along the leftbank of the river. Briefly, the Po river, not even in this occasion represented a border as we traditionally consider: in one side one, on the other side the other. However nothing more indeterminate of the concept of border when we speak of water, sea, river or whatever. And this is what must be pointed out: for Venica the Po river, until the fifteenth century was not the border between its Dominion on one side and the territory of the otheers (the Estensi or the others) onn the opposite bank. Instead it was in stake the river as space that from the mouth of the Po entered in the Lombardia and the pianura padana, a mobile border towards the inner of the plain. It was not a deal of conquest of mainland territory, it was to defend pports and passes on the Po river conquered by Venice at the beginning of the fifteenth century in order to expand its fluvial borders along that 'iter Padi' of fundamental and vital importance for the Republic. With this conforming the deep analogy that is highlight amng the expansion and the defence of the Sea-State borders and the expansion and the defence along the Po river, ambiguous borders according the traditional rules, such as ambiguouselement for Venice is the water, born in the lagoon, between sea water and river-water.
