Abstract

ITALIANO: Il volume indaga il cold case medievale dell’uccisione dell’inquisitore Pietro da Verona (1252) velocemente divenuto san Pietro martire (1253) e primo inquisitore-santo della Chiesa cattolico-romana. Oltre i miti storiografici, i contributi mostrano gli sviluppi – talvolta paradossali – di una morte funzionale al consolidamento dell’officium fidei medievale. La multidisciplinarietà dell’approccio mostra la ricchezza delle analisi possibili per affrontare il passato attraverso ciò che è sopravvissuto: lettere papali, frammenti di processi inquisitoriali, immagini dipinte e scolpite, libri contabili, documentazione notarile, testi liturgici, sermoni, oggetti – armi del delitto e monete – e resti ossei, ovvero il cranio, collegati a colui che subito è considerato un “martire della fede” il cui culto però fatica a consolidarsi. / ENGLISH: The book investigates the medieval cold case of the murder of the inquisitor Peter ofVerona (1252), who quickly became saint Peter martyr (1253) and the first inquisitor-saintof the Roman Catholic Church. Beyond historiographical myths, the essays show thedevelopments – sometimes paradoxical – of a death that was an important step toconsolidate the medieval officium fidei. The multidisciplinary approach demonstrates the rich possibility of analyses of the pastthrough what survived: papal letters, fragments of inquisitorial trials, painted and sculptedimages, account books, notarial documentation, liturgical texts, sermons, objects –weapons of the crime and coins – and bone remains, namely the skull, of whom wasimmediately considered a "martyr of the faith" whose cult, however, had some difficultiesto be established.
