Abstract
[EN] The paper reflects on the transformation in documentary practices between the 10th and 12th centuries, taking the city of Rome as a case study while situating it within a broader context. More specifically, it examines the major change in writing practices that several historians have defined as the ‘documentary revolution’. The phenomenon is analysed from two perspectives: first, its development within urban society; and second, its potential contribution to a broader reflection on the periodization of the High Middle Ages. / [IT] Il contributo si propone di riflettere sulle trasformazioni delle pratiche documentarie tra il X e il XII secolo, prendendo come caso di studio la città di Roma ma inserendola in un contesto più ampio. Più precisamente, intende riflettere su quel grande cambiamento nelle pratiche scrittorie che diversi storici definiscono ‘rivoluzione documentaria’, esaminando il fenomeno sia dal punto di vista del suo dispiegarsi nella società urbana, sia da quello del suo possibile contributo a una più generale riflessione sulla periodizzazione del pieno Medioevo.
