Abstract

[IT] Due dati sono sufficienti per individuare le connessioni tra ospedali e bisogni sociali all’apogeo della crescita economica medievale. Innanzitutto, è da considerare l’assunzione di responsabilità diretta da parte dei governi comunali nel campo dell’assistenza, che diveniva di fatto parte costitutiva della costruzione della res publica. Inoltre, la varietà di forme di protezione sociale elaborate dagli enti assistenziali documenta una azione che interessava larga parte della popolazione. La questione che in questa sede si intende affrontare è se e in che misura l’impatto sociale dell’assistenza fu in grado di rispondere alle disuguaglianze economiche. Osservando la società tardomedievale allo specchio delle risposte messe in campo, ci si può ad esempio domandare quanta (e quale) parte della popolazione era raggiunta, quali erano i bisogni considerati tali, a cosa miravano gli aiuti e come erano realizzati, quali possono essere considerati efficaci nel breve e nel lungo periodo. In questa prospettiva le disuguaglianze possono essere meglio comprese alla luce della realtà e delle percezioni della gente del tempo. / [EN] Two data points suffice to identify the links between hospitals and social needs at the height of medieval economic growth. The first is the direct responsibility assumed by municipal governments in the field of assistance, which became an integral part of the construction of the res publica. Furthermore, the variety of social protection mechanisms developed by welfare organizations documents an action that affected a large part of the population. The question we wish to address here is whether, and to what extent, the social impact of assistance was able to address economic inequalities. By looking at late medieval society through the lens of the responses implemented, we can ask, for example, what proportion (and what segment) of the population was reached, what needs were considered as such, what the objectives of the aid were and how they were implemented, and what can be considered effective in the short and long term. From this perspective, inequalities can be better understood in the light of the reality and perceptions of people at the time.
