Abstract
[DE] Burgen, Schwerter, Drachen, Mystik und Magie: Die Fantasy lebt von der Kraft mittelalterlicher Bilder. Aber sie erzählt in ihren verschiedenen Medien nicht einfach das historische Mittelalter nach, sondern erschafft ihre eigene – mediävalisierte – Form davon. Die Beiträge in diesem Heft bieten Einblicke, wie durch das Zusammenwirken von Nachahmung und Neuschöpfung Sekundärwelten entstehen, wie sie funktionieren und welche Bezüge sie zur Gegenwart aufzeigen. Dadurch wird deutlich, dass dieses populäre Mittelalter mehr ist als bloße Kulisse: Es erweist sich als Imaginationsraum, in dem Fragen von Macht, Identität, Geschlecht, Rassismus und Kolonialismus verhandelt werden. / [EN] Castles, swords, dragons, mysticism, and magic: Fantasy thrives on the power of medieval imagery. Yet, across its various media, it does not simply reenact the historical Middle Ages, but creates its own, medievalized version of it. The articles in this issue offer insights into how secondary worlds emerge through the interplay of imitation and re-creation, how they function, and how they relate to the present. This makes it clear that the popular Middle Ages are more than just a backdrop: they prove to be an imaginative space in which questions of power, identity, gender, racism, and colonialism are addressed.
