Abstract
The study examines the historical-cultural values of the infrastructure for water supply, through case analyses based on archival documents. The materials consulted include drawings, technical reports, administrative deliberations, and occasionally videos and documentaries from the second half of the 20th century. In the Italian countryside, human relationships with water are marked by fountains, drinking troughs and wash houses: important places for community water supply and social aggregation. A specific example of such cases is the Fonte Vecchia (“Old Spring”) and public lavatoio (wash house) in the Massignano municipality of the region of Marche. Both the water supply and wash-house are situated along a local road known as “delle Fontane”. The font “Strade, Acque e Fabbriche” (1768-1939) in the municipal historical archives, supplies documentary evidence about the history of both buildings. It results that both were constructed in the 19th nineteenth century, in conjunction with the creation of an aqueduct that provided improved supply to the entire village, at very significant economic expense. Documentary videos of local traditions, produced in the second half of the 20th century, provide further evidence of the anthropological value of these structures in the community, to the present day.
