Abstract
The second half of the 13th century is a time of profound changes for the Kingdom of Sicily: the death of Frederick II, the brief reign of Conrad IV, the rise of Manfred and, lastly, the Angevin conquest. These events marked a political shift, and in the frontier region of the Abruzzi the changes involved the construction/reconstruction by the Angevin kings of many towns. The lives and political strategies of the nobles of the region were greatly affected by the new political situation. Social ascent, maintaining the status quo and even simply surviving depended now, more than before, on the relationships with the kings and the new political entities of the Montanea Aprutii.
