Abstract

The thousand-year anniversary of Bobbio’s foundation has contributed to turn once again the attention to the diocesan historical archive and its distinct repositories (episcopal and capitular) which have recently been reordered, even though the operation has not yet been concluded. From the 9th to the 13th century we have a corpus of 370 documents at our disposal; much similarly to diplomatic fonds of other institutions, there is an enormous discrepancy in size between the two documentary repositories: 31 documents are preserved in the episcopal archive while the remaining 331 are held in the archive of the cathedral chapter. Overall, the repositories consist of notarial documentation, characterized by a large number of papers related to the economy and management of the see, almost all of which have remained unedited and untapped. The paper aims to offer a wide – if inevitably provisional – set of data in order to provide a preliminary basis for a diversified exploitation of the material.
