Abstract

ITALIANO: Il saggio analizza criticamente il pensiero storiografico di Mario Del Treppo, con particolare attenzione al concetto di "libertà della memoria" e al ruolo della memoria nella costruzione del sapere storico. Partendo dalla sua riflessione del 1976, ripresa e ampliata nella prefazione del 2005, l’articolo ricostruisce l’evoluzione del pensiero dell’autore, mettendone in luce la complessa relazione con la “scuola” delle Annales, la critica al marxismo storiografico e allo storicismo crociano, e la tensione tra memoria collettiva e ricerca storica. Del Treppo propone una visione della storiografia come disciplina autonoma e critica, capace di coniugare rigore metodologico, attenzione alle strutture di lunga durata e sensibilità per le discontinuità storiche. Il contributo si inserisce nel dibattito contemporaneo sulla memoria culturale, dialogando con le teorie di Koselleck, Ricœur e Jan Assmann, e riaffermando il valore della storia come spazio di libertà intellettuale, contro ogni forma di manipolazione ideologica o conformismo accademico. / ENGLISH: This essay offers a critical analysis of the historiographical thought of Mario Del Treppo, with particular focus on the concept of the “freedom of memory” and the role of memory in the construction of historical knowledge. Starting from his 1976 reflection—later revised and expanded in the 2005 preface—the article traces the evolution of Del Treppo’s ideas, highlighting his complex engagement with the Annales school, his critique of Marxist historiography and Crocean historicism, and the tension between collective memory and historical research. Del Treppo envisions historiography as an autonomous and critical discipline, capable of combining methodological rigor, attention to long-term structures, and sensitivity to historical discontinuities. The essay contributes to contemporary debates on cultural memory, engaging with the theories of Reinhart Koselleck, Paul Ricœur, and Jan Assmann, and reasserts the value of history as a space of intellectual freedom, resistant to ideological manipulation and academic conformism.
