Abstract
The conference, the proceedings of which are presented here, covered a topic that has long been considered central to studies on the history of the city: the use of tax sources to reconstruct urban structures. The geometric parcel-based land registries are in fact the most immediate and effective source not only for ascertaining the shape of the urban structures at the time these documents were drawn up, but also for following the development of the building fabrics and street patterns over time, investigating the uses and ownership of the land and buildings, and mapping activities. The conference, which took place exactly two hundred years after the establishment of the Deputation in charge of creating the first geometric parcel-based land registry of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (24 November 1817), therefore aimed to bring together scholars from different disciplines – city and architecture historians, archivists, urban planners – to examine possibilities and prospects in the study and use of these extraordinary documentary sources. Enrico Guidoni was an unquestionable master of developing and applying this investigation method, which is why on the tenth anniversary of his death, as part of the series of scientific events organised in his honour, the Florence conference focused on the study of historical land registers in relation to their use for the history of the city.
