Abstract
The work aims to re-examine the chronology of the settlement of the overseas canonical and military orders in Barletta, from the years after the First Crusade to the first quarter of the second half of the 12th century. Known for its strong connections with the Crusader State and the Holy Land, Barletta was the site of all main religious orders related to the Crusade. The canons of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem came first in the city, followed immediately by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and Templar. While, at the beginning of the second half of the 12th century , the canons of Saint Mary of Nazareth settled in Barletta, drawn by the port, important junction of complex connections among the city and rural lands of Capitanata, Murgia and Ofanto Valley. Certain, the link between the city of Puglia and Normans promoted the settlement in this part of Apulia of a considerable number of merchants and religious orders. The fame of the "sea of Barletta" was so great to be involved in the story of Franks to conquer of the Holy Sepulchre.
