Abstract
Decameron, II 2 narrates an amusing novella «di cose catoliche e di sciagure e d’amore» in which Boccaccio talks about significant religious matters, that could be summarized as follows. First of all, the manner in which God intervenes in the world seems to concede consideration to the theological knowledge of chump religious devotees: the main character of the novella, Rinaldo d’Esti, is an uncouth believer, but, in spite of this, his prayers are always granted. Secondary, the brigata ironically comments on saint Julian’s erotic power (which can be found also in previous comical works of the late middle age); the narrators also seem to be sceptic towards the thaumaturgical power of secular saints (a theme that recurs in the previous stories, I 1 e II 1). These two circumstances recommend prudence in judging the divine intervention in earthly events. In closing, when God looks like he’s operating in erotic matters (which is an unusual field, for Him), his action is characterized by uprightness.
